What to expect from counseling, therapy, and psychotherapy in Midlothian, TX

As I look around Midlothian, there are so many exciting opportunities happening with more changes to come. But, as I’m sure you already know, with change often comes some level of stress and anxiety. You’ve looked around and found a few therapists in Midlothian who seemed nice enough.

Now, you probably have some questions - which is absolutely normal.

Sometimes if we know what to expect, it helps to put our minds at ease and our worries to rest. Here are a few questions I hear from prospective clients:

What is Christian Counseling?

This answer may vary from practice to practice. My answer to this question is that I am a Christian and a therapist. I use a Christian approach in therapy meaning that it is Christ-centered and biblically based. I have an advanced degree and am licensed by the state of Texas as a professional counselor. I believe that good, evidence-based mental health care can be helpful when filtered through the lens of my Christian worldview. Some counselors may simply advertise as Christian therapists but have a much different approach to the way they interact with clients and do therapy. Why should I see a Christian Counselor when I can talk with my pastor?

I’m so glad you asked! Many prospective clients walk through my doors because their pastors, ministers, or someone from their church gave them a referral. Professional Christian counselors have a different kind of training than lay counselors or pastoral counselors. Although some pastoral counselors may have advanced training or certifications it’s not generally monitored through a licensing board. A Professional Christian Counselor has earned an advanced degree and has a license which is granted by a licensing board of the state. I like to think of it as having additional support on your team.

Do I have to be a Christian to see a Christian therapist?

Not at all. I work with people of all faith backgrounds and those without a faith background. Some prospective clients come to me because they feel more comfortable working with a therapist that has a common or shared belief of faith. Others have shared that they chose me as their therapist because something on my website resonated with them.

How will faith be a part of therapy?

Each Christian therapist will have their own way of how they typically integrate faith as part of therapy. It is always your choice, as the client, to decide if you want faith to be integrated into your therapy sessions. You and your therapist may choose to explore ways this might look based on your individual needs and therapeutic goals.
